DR ERIC ARNAUD

About your plastic surgeon

You may be wondering whether the person to whom you are about to entrust yourself has the necessary qualifications. This question seems all the more legitimate since you may not know that in France, historically, the title of Doctor of Medicine gave the theoretical right to perform all operations, and that “cosmetic surgery” on its own was for a long time not a speciality recognised by the Medical Council. It is therefore worth checking the competence of the person who is going to operate on you.

To perform “cosmetic” operations under the best conditions, one must first have trained in general surgery, and then have specialised in the surgical discipline that deals more particularly with the skin and contours, namely plastic surgery. During the years of hospital training, one learns to handle the skin, to make flaps and grafts, to repair the facial skeleton; one also begins to learn to perform plastic surgery operations for cosmetic purposes, a training that is completed above all by assisting senior surgeons during their procedures in private clinics. You must understand that plastic surgery operations for cosmetic purposes use the same techniques and follow the same principles as plastic surgery operations for reconstructive purposes, that there is often no clear boundary between “repair” and “aesthetics”, and that only complete surgical training in plastic surgery prepares one to face every situation.

This training is formalised by the award of the specialisation in plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery by the University, then recognised by the Medical Council, on the basis of the practical and theoretical training of the residency. This specialisation and this qualification allow membership of the French Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery (SOFCPRE) and of the National College of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery (CCPRE), the latter providing teaching for continuing medical education (www.plasticiens.org). The various national colleges are now federated by the European Board of Plastic Surgery, which coordinates the speciality of plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery at European level, and most of whose members belong to the European Association of Plastic Surgeons (www.euraps.org).

As regards surgery of the facial skeleton, the International Society of Craniofacial Surgery brings together specialists worldwide (www.iscfs.org). I am a member of these various national and international societies.

These explanations may have seemed a little long, but I believe they were useful to inform you and, I hope, to reassure you, by reminding you that this is an operation like any other, with its share of uncertainties.
